Working With Dogs For the First Time? Here’s What You Need to Know

Think you’re ready to own your own doggy day care? If so, it’s important to know what to do when working with man’s best friend for the first time. The work itself is very physically and mentally demanding, but the reward — both monetary and emotionally — is well worth the effort!

A good Camp owner is loving and understanding.

Unless you speak dog (which if you do, we suggest calling your local talk show, stat!), it can sometimes be difficult to understand what a dog needs or feels in a given moment. In order to work well with dogs, a Camp owner or counselor must be passionate, patient and understanding. Dogs are good judges of human character and can sense the love our Camp staff emits, making for a better experience all around.

To work with dogs, you must first be educated about them.

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again — our golden rule when onboarding new franchisees or Camp staff members is that the individual “must love dogs.” Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, and it’s important to have a basic understanding of them in order to successfully work with and care for them. Knowing the basics is half the battle!

Customer service is a huge player in the game.

While we admit that a large portion of our day is spent romping and running about with the cutest dogs in town, that’s not all it entails. Keep in mind that every dog that comes to Camp is loved and cared for deeply by their pet parents. A great Camp owner is able to communicate just as well with pet owners as he or she does with dogs. Likewise, we believe that “teamwork makes the dream work,” which means that all Camp personnel should be able to band together and act as a Pack for the greater good of the animals.

Working with dogs may be a demanding field, but in the end, it’s such a rewarding opportunity! Knowing what to do when working with dogs for the first time puts you at an advantage, both as a business owner and a dog lover.
