All About Puppies With Camp Bow Wow’s Sheri Mahan-Hunter

Our very own Sheri Mahan-Hunter of Camp Bow Wow Monroe (which recently opened as the first Camp in the state of Washington) met with KING 5 TV’s New Day Northwest to talk all things puppy — and she didn’t make the journey alone. Sheri and the K5 team were also joined by Justyna Kieko from Dog Gone Seattle, a nonprofit rescue, and a few adoptable furry friends named Black Jack, Lily, and Noah.

It’s true, “having a puppy is a ton of fun, but if you’re not prepared for all the care and work that comes along with having one, it can be overwhelming!” That’s why Sheri set out to dish a few puppy care secrets that every dog-owner-to-be should keep top of mind.

Tips for Choosing a Puppy

  • Think about your lifestyle. Do you have young, energetic children? Will you have the time and energy to exercise and train a young pup? Usually young children and young puppies go hand in hand, as long as you’re up for the added challenge. If you’re older or are getting a dog for an older relative, you may want to adopt an adult dog, as they’ll typically require less training and exercise.
  • Consider the financial responsibility. Getting a dog isn’t just about the upfront cost to purchase or adopt, it’s also about the long-term care costs. Factor in food expenses, vet bills, and pet insurance, to name a few. You’ll want to make sure you can afford Fido first, that way you don’t find yourself in a situation where you can no longer care for him.
  • Remember the importance of training. Crate training, in particular, can be a great way to teach a new puppy boundaries. Many dogs love their crates, as they’re a cozy place to call their own. Pet parents love crates because they provide a safe place to keep a new or adult pup when mom or dad has to run out, sleep, or do work around the house.
  • Have patience! Whether you add a puppy or a senior dog to the family, there will always be an element of training involved, as well as a general adjustment period for all. Just remember how much that pup loves and relies on you, and how much happier your life is with him or her in it!

“Realize you’re taking care of another life.”

Sheri said it best! Remember that choosing to be a dog-owner is a tremendous responsibility. You’re not just choosing a pet, but rather, adding another member to the family. For the full scoop, check out the video above or visit King5.com.
